Things to Do in Ver-sur-Mer and Asnelles, Near Arromanches

British Normandy Memorial, sand yachting on Gold Beach, summer events: the guide to Ver-sur-Mer and Asnelles, a few minutes from Arromanches-les-Bains.

A few minutes east of Arromanches-les-Bains, the Gold Beach coastline continues towards two villages that each deserve half a day of your time: Ver-sur-Mer, overlooked by the British Normandy Memorial, and Asnelles, a wide sandy beach where there is almost always a breeze. Between D-Day remembrance, watersports and summer events, here is how to plan your visit.

What is there to see at the British Normandy Memorial in Ver-sur-Mer?

On the heights of Mont Fleury, above Gold Beach, the British Normandy Memorial was unveiled in 2021: its pale stone columns bear the names of the 22,442 men and women who fell under British command during the Battle of Normandy. The sculpture of three soldiers charging forward, the colonnaded pergola and the sweeping sea view make it one of the most moving memorial sites in the region — also featured in our article on the Mulberry artificial harbour at Gold Beach, which tells the story of the other great engineering feat of June 1944, a few kilometres away.

Entry to the memorial and to the adjoining Winston Churchill Centre — two galleries and an educational area, inaugurated by King Charles III on 6 June 2024 — is free. The centre and its café are open every day from 10am to 6pm, from 18 April to 4 October. Only parking is charged, at €3.50 per day. Check current opening times on the official British Normandy Memorial website.

In 2026, for the third year running, the memorial hosts the "Standing with Giants" installation, from 25 April to 19 September: 1,476 silhouettes honouring the British and Commonwealth servicemen who died on 6 June 1944, with new figures added this year (beach masters, dog handlers, tank crews, nurses...). Seen against the sea in the evening light, it is a striking sight — many British visitors make a point of timing their trip around it. Details on the installation's official page.

Where can you go sand yachting near Arromanches?

At Asnelles, the wide sandy beach of the Gold Beach sector is a well-known spot for sand yachting: the flat, wide-open sands at low tide catch an almost constant westerly wind. The Asnelles nautical leisure centre (CLNA), a federal sand-yachting centre, runs introductory sessions with state-qualified instructors, suitable for beginners and children alike, timed around the tides. The club also offers kayaking, paddleboarding and catamaran sailing. Programme, time slots and current prices on the club's website.

If sand yachting isn't for you, Asnelles beach is simply a lovely place for a long walk: at low tide it stretches out of sight towards Ver-sur-Mer on one side and Arromanches on the other, with a few remains of the Atlantic Wall still visible in the sand.

What events are on in Ver-sur-Mer and Asnelles in summer 2026?

Both villages fill their summer calendar with local, community-spirited events:

  • Asnelles holds a popular ball (bal populaire) on 13 July 2026, on the sports ground next to the campsite — a friendly evening the night before Bastille Day, according to the programme published on the Asnelles town hall website.
  • Ver-sur-Mer hosts La Villa des arts on 18 and 19 July 2026, at the salle de la plage: a craft market, a concert and fireworks, over two relaxed, human-scale days. Full programme on the Ver-sur-Mer town hall website.

This summer, the NOMAD Car shuttle, line 125, runs the length of the coast, from Courseulles-sur-Mer to Grandcamp-Maisy via Ver-sur-Mer, Asnelles, Arromanches-les-Bains, Longues-sur-Mer and Port-en-Bessin: a practical way to leave the car at the studio. In 2026 it is scheduled to run from 5 July to 31 August, daily — check the up-to-date timetable on the NOMAD Normandie website.

Walkers can also reach Ver-sur-Mer and Asnelles on foot, by continuing along the coastal path that starts from the cliffs east of Arromanches: we cover this route in our article on the cliffs and coastal path at Arromanches.

What else is there to see in Asnelles, on Gold Beach?

Beyond the beach, Asnelles still holds several traces of 6 June 1944: bunkers scattered among the dunes, and the memory of the landing by the British 231st Brigade, whose assault waves opened the road to Bayeux that same day. The village itself has kept its human scale and its character as a family seaside resort, with its seafront villas and its promenade.
