Contemplations: Bayeux Cathedral Light Show 2026
Free evening in Bayeux: dates, days and hours for the Contemplations light show on the cathedral, plus where to stay 15 min away without a late drive home.
Norman summers now have their own after-dark rendezvous: Contemplations — Rendez-vous à la cathédrale, a free monumental light-mapping show projected onto the facade of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Bayeux. A great excuse to extend a day on the D-Day beaches into an evening in old Bayeux, before heading back to a quiet night's sleep just 15 minutes away.
Which evenings does the Contemplations show take place in Bayeux in 2026?
According to information published by the Bayeux Bessin Tourisme office, the 2026 edition runs from 14 July to 29 August 2026, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, from dusk until midnight — the projections play on a loop through that window, whose starting point naturally drifts earlier as the evenings shorten towards the end of summer. As with any open-air event, it's worth checking the up-to-date dates and times just before you go on the official Bayeux Bessin Tourisme website.
Created in 2022 by the company Les Spectaculaires, the show changes theme every year. The 2026 edition draws on the lush, colourful world of naive-primitive painter Alain Thomas: plant and animal motifs animate the Gothic facade, from the towers down to the chevet, set to an original musical score.
Unlike a simple static floodlighting, this is genuine video mapping: the images follow the contours of the stonework, run along the buttresses, climb up to the spire before flowing back down to the chevet. The effect changes depending on where you stand on the forecourt, so it's worth moving around during the projection rather than staying fixed in one spot.
Is the show free and do you need to book?
Yes, it is entirely free and no booking is required. Simply show up in front of the cathedral, on rue du Bienvenu in central Bayeux, at dusk. The show takes place outdoors, standing on the forecourt: a light jacket is worth bringing even in high summer, once the sun has gone down.
What can you do in Bayeux before or after the show?
Make the most of it and wander through old Bayeux at dusk: timber-framed houses, cobbled lanes along the Aure, rue Saint-Martin and rue Saint-Jean for a dinner stop before nightfall. The cathedral itself can be visited freely during the day, free entry outside religious services — a good chance to see by daylight the building you'll watch transformed after dark.
One thing worth knowing so you're not caught off guard: the Bayeux Tapestry is not on display at the moment. The museum that houses it is closed for renovation works until October 2027, and the embroidery itself is on loan to the British Museum in London from 10 September 2026 to 11 July 2027. We cover what's still worth seeing in Bayeux during the works — cathedral, old town, MAHB, British war cemetery — in our full guide to visiting Bayeux in 2026.
If you'd rather have dinner by the sea before heading to Bayeux for the show, head to Arromanches: our pick of local places to eat is in the article where to eat in Arromanches. Where can you park in Bayeux in the evening?
Bayeux has several parking zones across the town centre. A large share of the spaces (green zones) are permanently free, and the paid red zone, chargeable during the day, becomes free after 7pm — handy for an evening show. The up-to-date parking map is available on the official Bayeux town website.
How do you get to Bayeux from Arromanches?
Allow around 15 minutes by car via the D516 to connect Arromanches-les-Bains and Bayeux (10 km) — an easy drive at night, even after midnight once the show has finished. That's the whole point of staying on the coast rather than in town: you enjoy your evening in Bayeux, then drive back to a quiet night's sleep, away from the summer bustle of the town centre.
For a full day out, there's nothing stopping you from starting with Arromanches beach and the Mulberry artificial harbour at low tide, spending the afternoon at the Longues-sur-Mer battery or on the coastal footpath, then finishing the evening in Bayeux for Contemplations. You then drive back to sleep just minutes away, without having to hunt for accommodation in central Bayeux during peak season.
Stay in Arromanches after your evening in Bayeux
For an evening in Bayeux without giving up the calm of the seaside, drop your bags in Arromanches-les-Bains. Our studio in Arromanches is 15 minutes from the cathedral, comfortable and easy to reach even on a late return: an ideal base for combining an after-dark show in Bayeux with days on the D-Day beaches. Book your dates and enjoy the Norman summer without the hassle of parking in town.
