How to Get to Arromanches-les-Bains: Train, Bus, Ferry, Car

Nearest station, NOMAD bus from Bayeux, Portsmouth-Ouistreham ferry, driving from Paris or London: our practical guide to reaching Arromanches-les-Bains.

Arromanches-les-Bains has no railway station, no airport and no motorway exit bearing its name: it is a small village tucked into a bay, and it takes a little planning to reach. The good news is that once you are there, everything becomes simple: the studio sits right in the heart of the village, steps from the beach, and the car can stay parked for the whole stay. Here is our fact-checked guide to getting there, whether you are coming from Paris, Caen or the south coast of England.

Where is Arromanches-les-Bains?

The village lies in Calvados, Normandy, on the Bessin coast, at the western end of Gold Beach. Bayeux, the nearest town with a station and everyday shops, is about 10 km to the south. Caen, with its airport and mainline station, is a little over 30 km away. This position, between a major Norman hub and an unspoilt stretch of coast, is why almost every journey passes through Bayeux or Caen on the way in.

How do you get to Arromanches by train?

The nearest station is Bayeux train station, served several times a day by direct trains from Paris Saint-Lazare, with a journey time generally between two and a half and three hours depending on the service. Check current timetables and fares on SNCF Connect before booking, as frequencies vary by season.

From Bayeux station, it is still about 10 km to Arromanches: two options remain, the regional bus line or a taxi (see below). There is no direct train into the village itself — that last leg is the one change worth planning for.

How do you reach Arromanches by bus from Bayeux?

The year-round NOMAD Car 121 line connects Bayeux (Gare SNCF stop) to Courseulles-sur-Mer, calling at Arromanches-les-Bains (Avenue de Verdun stop) along the way, as well as Tracy-sur-Mer, Manvieux, Saint-Côme-de-Fresné and Asnelles. It is the most affordable way to arrive without a car. Detailed timetables, which vary by day of the week, can be downloaded from the official nomad.normandie.fr website or the NOMAD Car app — it is worth checking the day's departures before setting off, especially at weekends when frequency drops.

In summer, an additional seasonal shuttle, the NOMAD Car 125, runs between Courseulles-sur-Mer and Grandcamp-Maisy via Arromanches; it is handy for exploring Longues-sur-Mer or Port-en-Bessin afterwards without getting back behind the wheel. Our guide to choosing where to stay in Arromanches lists its exact operating dates.

Should you book a taxi from Bayeux station?

It is the quickest and simplest option if you are travelling with luggage: allow a good quarter of an hour between Bayeux station and Arromanches. As Bayeux is a small town, the number of available drivers is limited, especially in high season or around the 6 June commemorations — book your ride ahead of time rather than counting on picking one up straight off the train.

Which route should you drive from Paris or Caen?

From Paris, the most direct route follows the A13 motorway towards Caen, then exit 36 "Bayeux Est" onto the D613, which serves Bayeux, Arromanches-les-Bains and Courseulles-sur-Mer directly. Allow around 230 to 250 km and two and a half to three hours' driving depending on traffic. From Caen, allow a good 35 minutes on the same A13, for around 35 km.

Once in the village, parking is on paid car parks, which fill up quickly in July-August and around the early-June D-Day commemorations: it pays to arrive earlier in the day or check ahead with your accommodation.

How do you get to Arromanches-les-Bains from the UK?

For visitors coming from Britain, the most convenient crossing is the Brittany Ferries route between Portsmouth and Ouistreham (Caen): the crossing generally takes around 6 hours on daytime sailings (up to a little over 8 hours on some services), with several departures a week and the option to bring a vehicle. Check current schedules on the official Brittany Ferries website. Once you land at Ouistreham, allow around 35 minutes' drive to Arromanches.

By air, Deauville-Normandy Airport offers seasonal links with London, followed by around an hour and twenty minutes' drive to Arromanches; check current airlines and frequencies directly on the airport's website, as the offer changes from season to season. Caen-Carpiquet Airport, closer to the village, mainly serves French domestic destinations and suits an internal connection better than an arrival from the UK.

Once in Arromanches, do you really need a car?

Overview of Arromanches-les-Bains village and its beach at low tide

No, and that is the whole point of the village: once parked — or off the bus — the beach, the D-Day Landing Museum, restaurants and shops are all a few minutes' walk away. Many visitors choose to leave the car for the entire stay and get around on foot, or by seasonal shuttle for day trips further afield. To plan a full multi-day itinerary around the D-Day beaches, our D-Day beaches weekend itinerary sets out a day-by-day plan.

Stay in the heart of the village, without moving the car

Whichever way you arrive, the simplest next step is to settle into a central place to stay. Our studio in Arromanches sits right in the heart of the village, 200 metres from the beach: drop your bags, and leave the car (or the travel bag) alone until departure day.
